November 17, 2020 Review of: Reif Estate Gewürztraminer VQA

8/10 $13.95 Reif Estate Gewürztraminer VQA (Ontario). Straw yellow in colour. Very fragrant👃 of floral🌸, pear and honeysuckle. Dry to off-dry with medium body and crisp mouth watering acidity. Balanced with flavours of pear🍐, lycee, honey🍯 and little spice at the finish.

At first sip my mind jumped to thinking this glass would be sweet, but it actually IS dry and is quite different!😌 This is definitely not a wine to be consumed in volume but it can certainly be appreciated for it’s distinct and unique qualities, especially if paired right. It has a richness and concentration that reminds me of a Vidal (grape commonly used for icewine) but without the sweetness, and a distinct acidity.

It made for a great pairing with curried chicken! But also went well with the semi sweet chocolate🍫 that I busted out after dinner, which brought out the dryness nicely.

I picked this bottle up during Taste the Season last November (😭) and unfortunately *I don’t believe* that they sell it in local liquor stores.

Considering that this is a unique varietal that I don’t normally venture to, but is dry, of good quality, and low price… I’m giving it an 8/10 – It is definitely worth trying!
