October 2, 2019 Review of: Smoky Bay Winery Cabernet Sauvignon

8.5/10 $9.95 Smoky Bay Winery Cabernet Sauvignon (Australia). Clear ruby in colour. Very fragrant with fruity aromas of strawberry, cherry and smoke. Dry and medium bodied with moderate acidity and soft tannins. Really nice combination of jammy blackberry/ raspberry, subtle vanilla and mild oak flavours.
First poured slightly tart but improved after sitting, and had an overall profile that was similar to Shiraz. It is smooth and easy drinking, flavourful and juicy. Yet, in some ways, also uncomplicated. For just shy of $10 it offers excellent value and I was just as happy to consume it as any $15 bottle.
I recommend pairing with a spicy meal (we had spicy tikka) or perhaps some Brie with red pepper jelly, if you are just snacking.
This bottle came suggested to me by a friend and it did not disappoint. I actually purchased this one on three separate occasions and consistently thought pretty highly of it. To my surprise however, some of the friends in my company weren’t as impressed. So, that’s always interesting! I’ll let you be the judge for yourself 😉
Have you tried this one? What did you think? 👇
