September 8, 2018 – Review of: Ravens Wood Old Vine Zinfandel

5/10 $17.95 Ravens Wood Old Vine Zinfandel (California). Ruby auburn colour. Super ripe and fragrant. You can definitely detect the alcohol content here. I don’t think I was prepared for the taste, but I knew I was in for something different by the smell. This dry red has a bold and unique flavour that is both sweet with raspberry, and somewhat peppery/smoky…. which I can totally get on board with. BUT! Then came the aftertaste that started off strangely tart and turned almost bitter at the end. To be honest, the aftertaste was a bit of a deal breaker for me. It was more easily masked while enjoying with dinner than alone. This is the third time I have tried Ravens Wood Old Vine Zin, and every experience has been the same. I believe it’s likely the tannins* that are to blame (*post coming). Perhaps one day when my taste is more refined I will enjoy this one… but for the Young Winehopper that I am now, I’m out! ✌🏼
